Walt Disney World® Golf Blog

We are pleased to announce that we will again be hosting a Walt Disney World® Golf team in the upcoming 2019 PGA Junior League Golf season!

The PGA Junior League Golf program is designed to provide a fun, social and inclusive opportunity for boys and girls age 13 and under to learn and enjoy the game of golf.

The PGA Tour's Rory McIlroy and Rickie Fowler, and the LPGA Tour's Michelle Wie and Lexi Thompson, have served as official Ambassadors for the program. Two-time NBA MVP Steph Curry and Olympic Soccer Gold Medalist Alex Morgan recently joined the program as the first non-professional golfer Ambassadors for 2019!

Each League team consists of eight to twelve players and a PGA or LPGA Professional serves as the captain for each team. For the Walt Disney World® Golf team, the captain will be Michael Schlager, our PGA Director of Instruction.

There will typically be between four and seven teams that form a local league in a common geographic area, like Orlando. Depending upon the number of teams that are created within the area, the number of local events will vary, with the event schedule typically taking place between March and July.

Participating players wear numbered uniforms and play in a two-person, scramble format over nine holes. Matches between teams are scored based upon wins, ties and losses in three-hole segments, called "flags". Family members and friends are encouraged to attend to watch the events and to support their players.

In November of 2015, we were honored to have hosted the PGA Junior League Golf National Championship at Disney's Palm Golf Course. This event was the result of local teams competing in regional post-season events around the country and then 8 regional winning teams moving on to have the honor of competing in the National Championship.

In 2018, almost 4,000 teams, including more than 50,000 junior golfers from around the country, participated in the program. That is up from 42,000 junior golfers on 3,400 teams in 2017, so represents significant and continuing growth in the program. As a result of the growth in participation, the 2018 League National Championship, which was hosted at the Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona, expanded from 8 teams to 12 teams, enabling more junior golfers to participate and represent their local areas.

Player registration will begin at the end of January 2019! We look forward to welcoming you and your junior golfers to the "Happiest Place on TURF!"
